How Valid are New Age Claims?

So how valid are they?

Before in an older post I spoke about Channeling. Channeling is for people that practice highly advanced spiritual meditation. This meditation allows them to channel higher spirits.

There are obvious problems with this. How valid are these claims? Quite frankly, they have little to no validity considering that this is not a scientific source. They could just simply be the conjecture of some random wacko. And some of them probably are. In fact, the people who channel this information tell us flat out that we cant take it at face value, as some spirits do not tell the truth!

However, saying that, channeling is one of the major forces behind the generation of new information in the New Age belief system. Whether or not you believe it, well, it comes down to your personal beliefs. However, it is interesting to look at, in my opinion.

2012, A new perspective

The only thing that popular belief and New Age beliefs have in common is the word “apocalypse”.

Besides that, theres no more common ground.

Apocalypses are supposed to be bad, right? Well, as they see it, that may not be the case.

New Agers believe in a complex pseudo-scientific event that will occur in 2012. They are contingent upon many factors, most dealing with astrological signs. As with all information on the internet, there can be information overload and there is a great deal of it with this subject. In my documentary video, I will seek to break it down.

It is difficult to discern where these beliefs come from. Most of this information comes from different sources – ancient texts, many long forgotten spiritual traditions, such as the Mayans, the Hopi, the Egyptians (The Egyptians have a whole history of this stuff that we wont get into – but if you feel like going down that rabbit hole, just look up the pyramids), and channeling, which I will explain in a later post.

The main point however, is that this event is not necessarily a bad one. This event will not destroy the earth. Rather, they are talking about change. The earth is going to change, and humans along with it.

The core belief is that the earth and humans are going through an important evolutionary moment. This evolution, when completed, will lead to humans to a new stage of development.

When the Mayans said, “the world is going to end”, its not necessarily the world itself being destroyed, but rather it changing into something completely new.

I’m going to go into more in my next post, but I decided to try to give this in small doses, considering that this information is very very dense.

Why I chose the New Age Spirituality and 2012

There are a few big reasons as to why I chose New Age Spirituality and its relations to 2012 for my project. However, the main one is probably the fact that it offers a different view of doom and gloom than whats portrayed in the norm. The media in all of its opportunistic approaches towards such things, took full advantage of the scare of 2012, which originated from the Mayan Calendar; legendary in its accurate predictions. The movie “2012” is the epitome of such opportunistic jumps by the media, as Hollywood joined the fray and created a full blockbuster film. In fact, this was no ordinary film, as it starred one of Hollywood’s legendary actors, John Cusack. Obviously, this film wasnt just some b rated disaster film, but a large investment by Hollywood to cash in on the idea of 2012.

So what is 2012? Popular convention believes that since the Mayans ended the calendar on this date, the world is going to end. Literally. Its going to end, via some catastrophic, major and dramatic disaster, a total destruction apocalypse. Some people postulate that it will be a meteor, some say global warming – however, popular convention is the fact that literally, the earth is going to be destroyed. Particularly the date December 21, 2012 is the exact date in which the earth will be destroyed.

However, there is a group of people who do indeed believe that the world is going to end in 2012; and also believe that the world is going to end. However, its more of along the lines of the song by REM, “its the end of the world as we know it”. Key words – as we know it. As we know it. This group of people are very loosely based, and unlike Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc it is not an organized religion. It contains many differing beliefs, and combines both spiritual and ancient texts with practical scientific evidence, studies and long forgotten eastern philosophies to combine a comprehensive view of the world around us, and 2012. This view is called “New Age Spirituality”. I will be covering these views in my blog, and my overall progress of daily meditation.
